Part of the mission of DRBA involves seeking permanent protection for the Dolores River and the surrounding canyon country. Recently President Obama designated five new national monuments by using the Antiquities Act. Of special interest to us is the new Rio Grande del Norte monument. The Rio Grande flows through dramatic gorges and provides excellent whitewater recreation. The broader nearby landscape and river join the BLM’s National Conservation Lands.
Someday, the Dolores will enjoy similar protections. Right now our community is building consensus around a National Conservation Area designation for the Dolores that would include a Wilderness Study Area. DRBA supports these efforts and works to educate the boating community about that campaign. Here’s a recent letter to the editor of the Cortez Journal and a link to our last installment of The River Trip on KSJD that explains more.
